Environmental engineering plays a fundamental role in managing environmental impacts and promoting corporate sustainability. To ensure the safety and compliance of industrial operations, adherence to technical standards and norms is essential. Worldwide, standards such as ISO 14001 and ABNT NBR 15515 establish strict parameters for operations in the sector. In addition, Brazilian state and local laws, such as DD 038/2017 CETESB in São Paulo, regulate and establish mandatory guidelines in the national market.

EBP is recognized in the market for its technical expertise and commitment to the quality of its products and services. Certified according to ABNT NBR ISO 9001:2015 and accredited according to ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025:2017, EBP Brasil ensures the adoption of strict procedures to guarantee technical quality and improve its overall performance. In this article, we explore the main normative references followed by EBP Brasil and how its environmental consulting services provide compliance, efficiency and satisfaction to its clients.

The Importance of Norms and Standards in Environmental Engineering

Environmental standards are essential to ensure that industrial and business processes are conducted in a sustainable manner, minimizing environmental risks and optimizing resources. Using recognized methodologies, companies that follow these standards ensure:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Reduction of legal risks and compliance with local and international environmental requirements.
  • Efficient Resource Management: Optimization of water and energy consumption and reduction of emissions.
  • Corporate Reputation: Companies committed to good environmental practices strengthen their image with customers, investors and regulatory bodies.
  • Prevention of Environmental Liabilities: Reduction of negative impacts and strategic planning for risk management.

Main Standards Followed by EBP Brazil

1. ISO 14001: International Standard for Environmental Management

ISO 14001 is one of the leading global standards for environmental management systems (EMS). According to data from the ISO Survey 2022¹, more than 400,000 organizations in 191 countries have this certification. This standard defines requirements for organizations to establish, implement and continually improve their environmental processes, as established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)².

Evolution of ISO 14001

1996: ISO 14001:1996 (First published version)

2004: ISO 14001:2004 (Increased emphasis on documentation and operational control

2015: ISO 14001:2015 (Introduction of high-level structure, risk-based thinking and context of the organization)

2. ABNT NBR 15515: Preliminary Environmental Assessment

The ABNT NBR 15515 standard is a Brazilian reference for preliminary environmental assessment of potentially contaminated areas. Divided into three parts (15515-1, 15515-2 and 15515-3), this standard establishes a progressive methodology that begins with the preliminary assessment, followed by the confirmatory investigation and detailed investigation.

The first stage (15515-1) involves:

  • Survey of the area's occupation history (minimum 40 years when possible)
  • Identification of potentially contaminating activities
  • Analysis of historical aerial photos and past documentation
  • Technical inspections with photographic documentation
  • Interviews with people familiar with the site
  • Development of a preliminary conceptual model

How does EBP use this standard?

  • Preliminary diagnosis of environmental liabilities for the acquisition of industrial land.
  • Mapping of contaminated areas to define remediation strategies.
  • Support for environmental licensing based on criteria from CETESB and state environmental agencies.

3. DD 038/2017 CETESB: Guidelines for the Management of Contaminated Areas

CETESB (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo) board decision DD 038/2017 defines criteria for the investigation, monitoring and remediation of contaminated areas. This standard is widely used in environmental due diligence and risk management processes.

Applicability by EBP:

Execution of detailed investigations to determine the extent of contamination.

Development of efficient remediation plans for companies in the chemical and industrial sectors.

Strategic consultancy for the management of environmental liabilities, including negotiations with regulatory agencies.

Sectoral Applications of Environmental Standards

Chemical and Petrochemical Sector

For chemical industries, the implementation of ISO 14001 contributes significantly to reducing the risk of environmental accidents and optimizing the use of raw materials. A specific benefit is the integration with other management systems such as ABIQUIM's Responsible Care Program.

Real Estate and Civil Construction Sector

The application of ABNT NBR 15515 is particularly relevant for developers and construction companies when acquiring land, reducing the risk of hidden liabilities and ensuring the viability of new projects. Preliminary assessments can be integrated into technical and economic feasibility studies.

Mining Sector

For mining operations, compliance with DD 038/2017 CETESB (and equivalent standards in other states) is crucial for the management of impacted areas and mine closure planning, ensuring compliance with the increasingly stringent requirements of regulatory agencies and local communities.

Beyond the Sectors Mentioned

The chemical, real estate and mining sectors represent only a fraction of the possibilities for applying environmental standards. Each industrial segment has unique challenges that require specific technical approaches. EBP Brasil has expertise in developing customized solutions that transcend the examples presented, adapting regulatory methodologies to the particularities of each organization.

Effective Implementation of Environmental Standards: Critical Success Factors

Successful implementation of environmental standards requires a combination of technical knowledge, practical experience and structured methodology. Based on EBP Brazil's experience in numerous environmental projects over the past few years, we have identified the following critical success factors:

  • In-depth technical diagnosis: The initial assessment must be comprehensive and based on scientifically validated methodologies, where, for example, the complete characterization of waste flows is essential to identify reduction opportunities.
  • Stakeholder engagement: The involvement of all stakeholders, especially senior management and operational teams, is essential for the effective implementation of the standards.
  • Customized approach: Each organization has unique characteristics that require adaptation of methodologies, respecting the regulatory requirements, but considering the specific organizational culture.
  • Continuous and transparent measurement: The establishment of clear KPIs and reliable measurement processes allows demonstrating the progress and value of the environmental management systems implemented.

EBP Brasil applies these principles in its consulting projects, including ISO 14001 certification, environmental due diligence and remediation strategies according to CETESB and ABNT standards.
