On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), we analyzed which areas in Switzerland can be designated as protected areas or for other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). The result of our analysis helps assess where Switzerland stands in relation to the global target adopted at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Montreal (COP15). It requires that at least 30 percent of the world’s terrestrial and marine areas should be protected for biodiversity by 2030.
