While automated driving offers opportunities such as efficiency gains, improved road safety and flexible transportation options, it also comes with significant challenges. Among them are the transitions between conventional, mixed and automated traffic. We worked with researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to examine how these transitions on Swiss freeways should be designed and operated, how they affect traffic flow and safety, and what regulatory adjustments are needed.
