The objective of this consultancy is to conduct a technical and economic feasibility analysis for generating carbon credits through reforestation in the Aysén region, considering current and emerging opportunities associated with voluntary and/or local commitment markets.
A feasibility analysis was conducted for a carbon credits project on lands with various low productivity uses located in the Aysén region. It was concluded that the only applicable methodology is VCS Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (formerly AR-ACM0003), which involves afforestation of lands without forest cover. Among the proposed land management activities, the planting of native species from cold and humid native forest areas, such as Coihue, Lenga, Ñirre, and Magellan's Coihue, in areas of the properties where there is currently no forest cover, stands out. Additionally, these native species will be accompanied by a lower density of fast-growing exotic species to create windbreaks, thus protecting and enhancing the growth of the native species. According to calculations using the EBP tool, it is estimated that the project can capture an average of 5,431 tons of carbon per year, equivalent to 162,930 tons of carbon over the 30-year project duration. Economic flows were also analyzed, allowing determination of the marginal cost of credit generation (VCU), which was valued at 35.8 USD/VCU over 30 years.
