The objective of this consultancy is to conduct a technical and economic feasibility analysis for generating carbon credits through afforestation in the Valparaíso region, considering current and emerging opportunities associated with voluntary markets.
A feasibility analysis was conducted for an afforestation project aimed at generating carbon credits on agricultural lands located in the Valparaíso region, where it was concluded that the only applicable methodology corresponds to VCS Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (formerly AR-ACM0003), which involves afforestation of new lands. Among the proposed land management activities, the planting of native species from the sclerophyllous forest stands out, accompanied by a lower density of fast-growing exotic species to act as "umbrella" species and for the creation of recreational parks, thereby promoting community involvement in the activities.
According to calculations performed using EBP's tool, it was estimated that the project implementation could capture an average of 4,622 tons of carbon per year, equivalent to 138,666 tons of carbon over the 30-year project duration. Economic flows were also analyzed, determining the marginal cost of credit generation (VCU), which was valued at 24 USD/VCU over 30 years.
