EBP, in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, is developing an initiative focused on the future of the energy sector in Chile. The purpose is to contribute a common perspective on the major factors of change and trends that will shape this future. The results of the study will be presented at two forums with diverse participants, and a document will be submitted to the new government as input for the process of updating the Energy Policy 2050.

The study is part of the 2030 Energy Scenarios initiative, which serves as a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue regarding the development of the energy sector in Chile. It is organized through a strategic alliance of various institutions, including the Association of Electric Companies, which brings together distribution and transmission companies, the Association of Energy Generators, the Association of Natural Gas Companies, the Association of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies, the NGO Chile Sustentable, the NGO AVINA, the NGO Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano, Fundación Chile, Fundación Zoma Fund, and EBP Chile. The 2030 Energy Scenarios initiative has been operating for eight years and has developed based on a unique methodology that integrates rigorous technical analysis with inclusive cross-sector dialogue and an effort to build minimal common visions. This platform has generated numerous valuable proposals and inputs that have been incorporated into the formulation of energy policies in recent years, with the Energy Policy 2050 being its main reference.

Continuing along this path, the project "Future of Energy in Chile" will be implemented in 2018, aiming to develop a multisectoral initiative regarding the future of the Chilean energy system to build a common vision on the main drivers and trends that will shape this future. The analysis will focus on the study of the "five D’s":

  • Decarbonization of economies and energy portfolios
  • Decontamination
  • Decentralization
  • Distributed energy
  • Digitalization, innovation, and modernization of the sector

To achieve the project's objectives, the following activities will be conducted:

  1. Collection and systematization of patterns of change and trends at both the international and national levels, which will serve as the basis for discussion in the forums. This will be carried out by the University of Chile, Adolfo Ibañez University, HEC Paris, and EBP Chile.
  2. Preparation of two forums with multiple stakeholders from the public and private sectors, NGOs, academia, national award winners, scientists, among others. They will be invited to a one-day event to present the main results gathered, aiming to reflect on the factors of change and major trends identified in stage 1 of the project.

Based on the opinions collected in the forums, along with the results presented there, the information will be systematized into a consolidated document, which will be submitted to the new government as input for the process of updating the Energy Policy 2050. The information will also be distributed among the main relevant stakeholders in the private sector.
