The aim is to implement the first 100% energy self-sufficient protected area in Chile, utilizing renewable energy from the region to generate its own electricity and heat, as well as incorporating energy efficiency strategies in tourism infrastructure and park ranger facilities.
The project "Development of a Management Model for Zero Emission Tourism Operations in Protected Wilderness Areas" is an initiative driven by the Corporation for the Promotion of Production (CORFO), through its National Strategic Program for Sustainable Tourism (Transforma Turismo), with the sponsorship of the Embassy of Switzerland in Chile. EBP and TKO Consultores are responsible for implementing the project.
This work includes the development of a methodology and its application in a pilot project at Conguillío National Park. The goal is to create a management model for “zero emission” tourism operations in Protected Wilderness Areas (ASP) that raises awareness and involves communities to promote decentralized and participatory energy generation based on renewable resources from the ASP, enhancing energy efficiency through efficient infrastructure.
In order to ensure the early implementation of concrete measures, the Embassy of Switzerland in Chile allocated funding for the first three initiatives to be executed, which are:
The project commenced on August 16, 2017, in Melipeuco, in the presence of key stakeholders representing CONAF, Transforma Turismo, the Municipality of Melipeuco, the company SENDAS, and the Regional Tourism Chamber.
