Developing the city AND the port: Contributions to the strategic development of the Port of Hamburg in the areas of port & city, tourism, and cooperation identify different uses for the Port of Hamburg and their interrelationships, and highlight development prospects for the port area.
With the services awarded to EBP at the beginning of 2010, the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) aimed to identify and correlate the various usage requirements placed on the Port of Hamburg. The differentiated requirements arising from port-related and urban usage demands must be developed in a compatible and targeted manner alongside and in conjunction with one another.
Due to the growing intensity of urban demands on the Port of Hamburg, the interests of port operations and port development were structured in relation to urban demands and solutions were developed. This provided a reliable basis for negotiation and decision-making for the HPA and port operators in order to continue to ensure planning security for the port industry at the interface between the port and the city.
The result was the development of a “land use strategy” for the Port of Hamburg, which serves both as a tool for internal coordination of land-related development strategies within the HPA and as a basis for deriving solutions for areas of conflict between the port and the city [“cooperation areas”].
EBP prepared an internal HPA working report entitled “Contributions to the strategic development of the port in the areas of port & city, tourism, and cooperation,” developed and implemented the “land use strategy” instrument as a GIS-based bundling tool for all land-related information, and accompanied and managed the processing process in conjunction with a large number of interdepartmental consultations.
