From 2015 to 2020, the German Weather Service replaced its measurement data acquisition systems in its secondary measurement network with the new modular data acquisition systems “MODES III” for standard, precipitation, and wind measurement stations (W).
During development, particular emphasis was placed on modularity, open architectures, and versatility. Thanks to their design, which is based on tried-and-tested industrial automation components, MODES III stations offer robust technology with high reliability. Only components that meet the requirements of the German Weather Service, particularly with regard to high measurement accuracy, extended temperature ranges, and low power consumption, were used in production.
The MODES III system complies with the applicable VDE regulations and EU directives. It is CE and EC compliant. Compliance with the regulations has been verified by an independent expert opinion.
The software is based on a modular, modern multi-layer architecture running on a Linux operating system. Optionally, the system can be operated using a client application that runs on both Windows and Linux.
The individual hardware and software components were selected based on a modular design principle and optimally coordinated with each other. Adaptations to specific tasks can be made with little effort.
All data acquisition and processing within the MODES III station is accompanied by extensive quality checks. In addition to many other tests, limit value tests are carried out and duplicate sensors are compared with each other. Further tests can be freely defined or linked together as required.
The MODES III system offers a well-rounded complete package that is characterized by the highest quality, easy maintenance, and excellent cost-effectiveness, and also offers the option of replacing individual modules as needed to meet specific requirements.
EBP Deutschland GmbH played a leading role in the development and production of the system. Since 2018, it has been responsible for maintaining and upgrading the MODES III software.
