Demographic and economic structural change also require adjustments to urban infrastructure and the housing market in Brandenburg an der Havel. EBP provides strategic and conceptual support for this urban redevelopment process.
Declining population figures and a resulting increase in vacant housing triggered an urban redevelopment process in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel around 15 years ago. With the help of the “Stadtumbau Ost” (Urban Redevelopment East) funding program, this process has now brought about significant and positive urban development effects. Visible improvements have been achieved in the historic old town, the Gründerzeit districts, and residential areas. Old buildings have been renovated or revitalized, and housing stock in residential areas has been converted and modernized. Housing that no longer meets demand has been taken off the market or demolished. The overall vacancy rate in the city has been reduced. The housing companies represented in the ARGE Stadtumbau (urban redevelopment working group) are jointly promoting the city as a place to live and work.
EBP has been actively supporting this process for years as part of its urban redevelopment management services. In addition to monitoring and forecasting development processes and providing support with funding-related tasks, the focus of our work is on city-wide and sub-area strategy consulting, planning and implementation management, and communication and public relations. The urban redevelopment is based on the city's master plan and regularly updated urban redevelopment strategies.
Despite the successes achieved so far, there is still a need for action. Increasing migration dynamics and very different developments within the city (coexistence of growing inner-city and shrinking residential areas) pose particular challenges. The need for fine-tuning continues to grow. With suitable, tailor-made instruments and comprehensive communication and control processes, it will be necessary to continue to respond in a targeted manner in the future.
