Working on behalf of the Canton of Basel, EBP completed the planning for a solid-construction, residential complex offering space for 50 to 60 rental apartments and a kindergarten.
The project culminated in a residential complex offering 50 to 60 apartments in the middle of the city of Basel for multiple generations of residents, as well as a kindergarten. The aim of the project is to provide housing for tenants of various generations and backgrounds. The development project consists of two buildings joined by a shared underground car park. One of the buildings will be rendered in concrete and will close a gap in the existing perimeter block development located at Hebelstrasse. The second, larger building will be a two-storey wood construction in an inner courtyard location.
The winning design was submitted by Esch Sintzel Architects and EBP as part of an architectural design competition that included 45 design proposals.
The demanding cost specifications and the special challenges presented by wood constructions forced the planning team to identify cost-effective and functional solutions that nonetheless meet the high quality design requirements.
Since opening its doors to its new residents, the complex has won three awards:
In the fall of 2021 the project was selected from among a total of 530 submissions for the Prix Lignum Gold National. According to the jury, the building complex distinguished itself in particular thanks to its masterful wood composition, a lofty room design enabled by exposed beam ceilings, and an exquisite implementation evident in an abundance of visible and hidden details.
